![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The sheep were ‘threatened’, ‘endangered’, and we made great efforts to contribute to their revival as a whole. Thick hearty coats for desert winters, coats made of colors that reflected the Southwestern landscape. The sheep were sacred to my friends I worked alongside, their histories woven tightly together. Years ago, I was lucky enough to have an internship that allowed me to live close to the land, work alongside incredible and genuine people, and help care for 400 Navajo Churro sheep. Despite this I still never have been able to express my feelings towards him, so when I came across this ‘drawing on the past’ comp, I knew exactly what I wanted to say and draw. Long story short, my grandfather defied convention and as he was taken off life support he brought himself back from the brink, becoming somewhat of a celebrity in the hospital. All of this is unspoken though, as a very proper English man, feelings don’t tend to make their way into conversation much, and I never quite knew how I felt about my Grandfather until I was stood over his supposed deathbed saying my final goodbyes. I have a great deal of admiration and love for my grandfather who can surely be credited for a large part of the person my mother grew into. Sadly while a young teen my mother lost her mother and my grandfather’s wife Iris, which left my grandfather as a solo parent with a young teen to care for. British born to humble beginnings and the youngest of his siblings, at a young age he left the country that he loved and ended up in New Zealand via Australia. Integrity is a word that comes to mind when I think of my Grandfather. The ocean at night taught me how to let go. Sadly these drawings are now obsolete, just like the dot matrix printers through which the paper was fed. The paper could unfurl endlessly, allowing my drawings to stretch to the limits of my child sized brain. When I was a child, my parents would bring home reams of perforated continuous dot matrix printer paper for me to draw on. Just a little warning here, there are A LOT of images for your browser to load. That love will always be present and I can belong. I am a queer gender-fluid artist and my family of crows (present and past) loves me no matter what. My family (including my ancestry) has evolved in so many ways but the traditional ways in which family is vital and strong has never wavered. She told me that like a family of crows, even if one strays away, she’ll never give up on them. My mother’s way of showing how unrelentless her love is for me and our family was narrating this story. They got my mother’s attention and she got the young crow free. A young crow fell from the nest and got stuck. My mother told me about this true story of a family of crows in our backyard. ![]() Big thanks to my sister for helping transcribe all the handwritten stories. Sorry it’s taken so long to get all these submissions published, but I think when you see how many there are, and imagine typing them all out, you’ll understand. It was cool to see people actually connecting with the art on the wall (this is something I don’t often see at art shows for some reason). I loved reading through them all, and at our art show here in Vancouver ( photos here), many people came over to me to share their favourite stories. Huge thanks to everyone who took part! The artworks you all sent in were terrific but I was blown away by some of the intensely personal stories many of you shared. If you somehow missed it, I asked people to submit drawings of people, places, and things, that positively affected their lives. Even those who have not worked in a call center know the verbiage. Various shots of the call center are filled with the familiar telemarketer pitches. The first Filipino movie he saw in the theaters is Carlo J. It is what it was set out to be, entertainment, the cheap and horrible kind.įrancis Joseph Cruz, or Oggs, litigates for a living and writes about cinema for fun. It has the feel of sterile improvisation. The characters, instead of being shaped from concept or the logic of the story, are just reliant on the offscreen personas and charisma of the actors and actresses playing them.Ĭonsequently, “Call Center Girl” hardly feels thought out. The movie is afflicted by atrociously lazy writing. Every character is either a stereotype or an ornament, meant to be nothing more than an ingredient to carry on a punchline. There is very little characterization elsewhere in the movie. The attempt is evidently a failure since never once does “Call Center Girl” evoke anything other than uninspired silliness. “Call Center Girl” says nothing relevant about the lifestyle and profession it brazenly utilizes for its own generic purposes.Ĭuaresma’s only attempt at originality lies in his effort to juggle within the sordidly schizophrenic narrative his brand of inane comedy with the requirements of sappy melodrama. Setting the plot within the world of call centers is nothing more than a needless front. It is because it has been told and retold – in various other films and shows that portray the Filipino mother as constantly misunderstood and mistreated. If the plot is familiar, it is not because it grossly resembles reality. Just to repair her relationship with her wayward daughter, she works with her in a call center, spending her nights selling useless fitness products to depressed Americans just to earn enough money to pay for her daughter’s whims. She returns just to be widowed and to find out that her youngest daughter (Jessy Mendiola) abhors her. She is an overseas worker, slaving away in a cruise ship for the survival of her family. She is presented as the pinnacle of Filipino suffering. Yet “Call Center Girl” actually begs for sympathy for Teresa, who as directed by Cuaresma and portrayed by Pokwang, is woefully immature. She rapidly mouths supposedly funny nonsense, automatically bursts into tears with superhuman ease, and needlessly performs splits and stunts for no apparent reason.īy the middle of the movie, the curiously charismatic comedienne turns the hapless mother into a circus act, siphoning all humanity out of an already thinly-written character. Firstly, players usable for playing back MIDI files are far and few between. In this context, what inspires people to transform MIDI files to MP3 files could be concluded as two points below. However, there is a saying goes that what is rational is actual and what is actual is rational. Many a person longs for converting MIDI to MP3 though they are not of a sort, which seems to be unreasonable. Regardless of the profound definition, if one has a MIDI file on PC, he or she can hear sounds come out of the speaker after double-click it though it is not sound. MIDI files are simply a way of saving a stream of MIDI data to disk so that it can be played back later. It defines how electronic musical instruments, computers and other related devices can communicate with each other. What is MIDI? MIDI is a protocol not sounds. Whether it’s a single gene disorder such as cystic fibrosis or a multi-gene disorder such as schizophrenia, inherited diseases cause great suffering. There are six ethical principles that obligate us to embrace human genome editing:Ĭredit: Jeffrey Phillips 1. It allows us to liberate ourselves from the biological constraints of evolution and move toward a state of self-designed evolution. DNA manipulation allows us to correct genetic aberrations and enhance the human genome. ![]() Humans exhibit some 250 genetic disorders only 20–25% of embryos are fit enough to develop into a baby and 6% of newborns exhibit a major birth defect. It is the result of natural selection under particular environmental pressures. The human animal is not some finely balanced masterpiece of divine creation. Why permitting human genome editing is an ethical obligation Here, in his own words, Savulescu makes his case. An advocate of “procreative beneficence,” which holds that parents should select the best child they could have based on the best available information, he believes the technique is an ethical imperative. Oxford-based, Australian-born bioethicist Julian Savulescu is at the forefront of those who believe we should allow human embryo editing. But some ethicists are now changing their minds. That’s why genetic editing of embryos has been seen as a moral no-go zone for four decades. They range from the potential for creating a genetic elite to unpredictability of the long-term effects of altering the DNA of our species. The perils of genetically engineering babies have been well-articulated. Now we have to decide whether to take the next step.īy any measure, it will be a fraught decision. Precision genetic editing has catapulted us to the threshold of a GATTACA-like world. Do we have the right to consign all future generations to our current idea of what an ideal DNA code is? In Australia, the question is: should we allow the research to happen here? And does this new tool send us down a slippery slope to a world where all babies are engineered? Another consideration: genetically edited embryos would pass on their edited DNA to future generations. ![]() Ultimately it’s not the scientists, but members of the public and their political representatives who determine what laws and regulations are needed. This debate may soon come to a neighbourhood near you. The moral line in the sand, it seems, is now indistinct. Instead, they concluded that “as scientific knowledge advances and societal views evolve, the clinical use of germline editing should be revisited on a regular basis.” While they held that “it would be irresponsible to proceed with any clinical use of germline editing”, they did not push for a moratorium on research. The participants came to a different view. A month later, Francis Collins, Director of the US National Institutes of Health, proclaimed the agency would not fund research that is viewed “almost universally as a line that should not be crossed”.Īt the end of that year, an international summit was held in Washington, co-hosted by the US National Academy of Sciences and US National Academy of Medicine, the UK Royal Society and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In March 2015 a number of US researchers, including those employed by private companies who are testing gene editing as a treatment for diseases such as HIV, haemophilia, sickle-cell anaemia and cancer, called for a moratorium on the genetic editing of human embryos. The US has become a major battleground in the ethical debate over CRISPR-Cas9. But others, such as China, have taken a more permissive approach to the technology. In some countries, including Australia, the UK, and many European nations, ethical concerns have prompted restrictions or an outright ban on the use of CRISPR-Cas9. ![]() ![]() ![]() You’ll also have a chance to work closely with and help mentor the product managers on the Mobile team. Harvested seed must be cleaned of chaff to allow mechanical planting, which can exclude small seeds. All rights reserved.Ĭommercial seed mixes and various mechanical planting methods have been implemented to overcome barriers to successful restoration of degraded grasslands but their effectiveness in aiding the restoration process has been understudied. It is necessary to determine the longer‐term impacts of switches in disturbance regimes, and whether recovery thresholds have already been crossed. This suggests that seed‐ and/or dispersal‐limitation may limit passive restoration outcomes in fragmented landscapes. Positive outcomes for other disturbance shifts (grazing → mowing, or cultivation → grazing) occurred when the disturbance type was accompanied by seed addition, or in landscapes where dispersal from nearby remnant sites was possible. We found mostly no change in native and exotic species richness when management changed from stock grazing to fire (at least in the short term ≤10 years). We review literature that reports instances where there has been a change in disturbance type to examine how grasslands respond to disturbance switching. Here, we examine if the change in disturbance type-a disturbance switch-improves the native composition of grasslands. Recently, native grasslands have been acquired to improve the reservation status of the threatened community and management strategies have been implemented that involve the removal of livestock grazing and the re‐introduction of fire or other biomass reduction methods. ![]() Changes in disturbance type, particularly the removal of Indigenous fire and the introduction of livestock grazing, resulted in the local extinction of fire‐dependent and grazing‐sensitive native species, and led to an increase in exotic species. Temperate native grasslands in Australia have been decimated across their range since European colonisation (>200 years ago), and the few remaining remnants are mostly fragmented and degraded. Understanding the environmental requirements needed for seed germination, together with an appropriate pre-treatment before sowing, can speed up seedling emergence and increase total emergence when using native Poaceae species for seed-based restoration. ![]() Generally, soil type did not influence emergence rates for either GEC or SET. Seedling emergence from seed cookies was low in all three species (<15%). bladhii, total seedling emergence was the highest (36% in both soils) for primed seeds with KNO 3. spicigerum, priming and/or coating with KNO 3 + SW had the highest cumulative emergence. Incorporating GECs together with seed priming or seed coating treatment significantly increased seedling emergence rates and promoted earlier emergence as compared to the untreated control. Laboratory germination percentages achieved were <50% for all species, limited by dormant seeds. The seeds were exposed to different germination-enhancing chemicals (GECs, namely smoke water (SW), potassium nitrate (KNO 3 ) or a combination (SW + KNO 3 )) and treated with three different seed enhancement technologies (SETs, namely seed priming, seed coating or seed cookies) then sown into two contrasting soil types (sodosol or black vertisol). In this study, germination biology of three Australian native Poaceae species, such as Cymbopogon refractus, Capillipedium spicigerum and Bothriochloa bladhii, was investigated. For Australian native Poaceae species, seed quality and dormancy can impose constraints on restoration success. Using seeds to restore natural ecosystems has a greater chance of success if the seeds used are ready to germinate given appropriate environmental conditions. ![]() ![]() ![]()
